Cooperation on questions related to the exercise of jurisdiction in the Antarctic Treaty area


The Representatives,

Recalling Article IX(1)(e) of the Antarctic Treaty, which provides that Contracting Parties consult on “questions relating to the exercise of jurisdiction in Antarctica”;

Convinced of the necessity to consider such questions with respect to human activities and incidents occurring in the Antarctic Treaty area;

Noting the increase of human activities in the Antarctic Treaty area;

Acknowledging the need to promote compliance with law in the Antarctic Treaty area;

Recognising the unique challenges, both practical and legal, of law enforcement in the Antarctic Treaty area;

Recommend that:
the Parties cooperate to institute discussion on issues related to the exercise of jurisdiction in the Antarctic Treaty area.
